ABOUT THE NCCC

The Northern California Cancer Center (NCCC), founded in 1974, is a nationally recognized leader in the fields of cancer research and education. We are committed to better understanding the causes of cancer, improving the quality of life for those living with cancer, and assisting others to make healthier choices.

Through our research, we seek to discover the causes of cancer and to find ways to prevent or detect it early. Some of our many research studies try to determine why certain people develop cancer and others do not, why dietary and behavioral factors may reduce the risk of cancer, and how early detection and treatment can increase the rate of survivorship. The results of these studies have dramatically helped hundreds of health-care professionals and thousands of individuals with vital and often life-saving information.

The Community Education program was developed 12 years ago in response to the public's need for community-based services addressing cancer-related issues. Our education programs, support groups, workplace/community seminars, and conferences reach more than 3,000 people every year. The programs serving diverse communities help people understand how to make informed decisions about their health and health care.

NCCC offers a variety of Information services for the public and the scientific community. We operate the Cancer Information Service (1-800-4-CANCER) for California. A program of the National Cancer Institute, this service fields more than 40,000 calls each year from across the state. In addition, we maintain various cancer-related databases, providing researchers and the public with vital information about trends in cancer cases.

For more than 25 years, the Northern California Cancer Center has made a real difference! Education programs have dramatically improved the quality of life for many Bay Area residents concerned about cancer. The results of our research have significantly enhanced the public's understanding of the causes and risk factors of cancer.
